What are Malas?
The word “Mala” in Sanskrit, means a garland or a string of beads, usually 108 beads. Malas have been in use for more than 3000 years in India and have their roots in Hinduism, Buddhism and the practice of Yoga. Traditionally Malas are used as a meditation tool for a type of meditation called “Japa” which means “to recite”. During a Japa meditation, the devotee would repeat a mantra which is a word or sound that helps with concentration. A traditional necklace mala is like a rosary but made with 108 beads plus a Guru bead.

Anyone can wear mala beads, whether you meditate or not. Often, people are drawn to Malas for their healing qualities of calming the mind, providing inner peace and being mindful. Malas are made using a wide variety of materials like precious and semi-precious gemstones, seeds, wood beads and crystals.

At Esme and Sita, we are proud to have specially commissioned our malas made with beautiful semi-precious gemstones and Rudraksha beads. Mala Beads can be worn as beautiful pieces of jewelry. We currently carry beautiful wrist malas. We’ll be getting necklace Malas soon.

Gemstones have been used for centuries for healing and to reflect energy from the earth. Each gemstone also has a particular meaning and certain healing properties, and wearers can choose their mala beads based on what they’re seeking from their meditation. We have a more comprehensive list of gemstones and their meanings. Amethyst, for example, promotes spirituality and helps the wearer stay centered, spiritual and serene. Tiger’s Eye, on the other hand, promotes courage and helps the wearer stay powerful, grounded and mindful.

Why 108 beads?
Malas allow the wearer to keep count of their mantra recitation, allowing them to stay focused, calm and relaxed while repeating a mantra 108 times. In traditional Tibetan Buddhism, mala beads are often created using 108 beads, as a 108-bead mantra repetition represents the 108 worldly sins in the Buddhist doctrine. In addition, the number 108 is considered to be sacred in many Eastern religions, representing the universe as one thing (1), nothing (0) and everything (8, or infinity). The numbers 9 and 12 also have spiritual significance in many Eastern religions, with 9 times 12 equaling 108. In addition, the numbers 3 and 6 are significant in relation to mala beads, with Buddhist malas coming in three forms: 108, 54 and 27 beads.

How to use mala beads?
Mala beads can be used in a variety of ways to help you manifest and achieve your dreams and desires.
Start by giving your mala an intention or mantra.

Intention Setting
What are your dreams?
Your goals?
Your deepest desires?
Take a minute. Think about it. Get intentional.

Mala beads are more than just accessories. They’re meditation tools that have been used for thousands of years. They encourage us to pause, breathe and realign with our deepest intentions. They motivate us toinvest in moments of self-care and compassion. They’re our spiritual forget-me-nots.

Using mala beads to set intentions is a powerful way to manifest your dreams and achieve your goals.

Once you’ve given your mala an intention you can use it during your meditation practice to keep you focused and on track. Originally used for japa meditation, mala beads are a great addition to any modern meditation practice. Wear your mala around your neck or clasp it firmly in your palms as you tune in and focus on your breath.

You can also bring your mala beads to your mat during your yoga practice as a way to focus and bring awareness to your intentions and to infuse your mala with the energy of your practice. We recommend placing your mala beads on the corner of your mat and using them as a focal point during your practice.

Our wrist malas or stacks can be worn during yoga and are another great way to bring intention to your practice.

If yoga and meditation aren’t really your thing, simply wearing a mala can help you feel good and manifest what you’re looking for. We make our mala beads with healing gemstones that carry special and specific energetic properties that can help you attract and repel certain feelings, thoughts and emotions.
